Curve Cutting Handsaws
Handsaw is common carpentry tool that has been in use for centuries and is still widely used as a main tool for carpentry. Using handsaw is not a tough task, what you need to have is some special skills and techniques to use the handsaw effectively. Handsaw is usually given preference over power saws as it doesn't require any electricity supply to function. In this article we will discuss the types of handsaws used to saw the wood.

Before moving forward it is important to know what actually handsaw is and how it is made. A handsaw is a tool having a thin steel blade with serrated teeth along the bottom edges fixed with a plastic or wooden handle. It is these teeth which describe the working of the handsaw. Different designs of handsaws have different types of teeth to perform specific functions. In this article we are going to discuss different types of curve cutting handsaws which are used to cut the curves in the wood.

These are the three saws used for cutting curves in the wood. All the three have narrow blades. Besides these three a keyhole saw may also be used.
Coping saws are considered as the best curve cutting saws in general. Like bow saws these saws also have the blades which can turn through 360 degrees. Coping saw resembles to a large junior hacksaw in shape. Handle is used to raise the tension of the blade. If you want to make an enclosed cut in wood, first you have to bore a hole and then thread the blade through that hole, adjust the frame afterward. For working on a curve you need to slop now and then to spin the blade. Moving the entire frame is not enough, slopping is required. Try not to twist the blade in the process.

The only point goes against the coping saw is its frame. You cannot saw the wood deeper than the frame.
For fine finishes or cutting very tough curves, fret saw is very handy, such as working on a plywood or veneer. The spring on the frame is used to control the tension of the blade, which is very narrow and is attached with its teeth facing the handle.
These are used as the last option when all the other saws become ineffective for enclosed cuts. Unlike other saws, which cut on the forward stroke, the blade of the keyhole saw cuts on the backward stroke and the pressure is exerted on the backward stroke rather than forward stroke. Like coping saw, here in some situations you have to drill a hole and thread the blade through the hole to start the cutting process. Trimming knife handles can be used with padsaw blades.
